Equations Showing the Distributive Property - Set 1

Explanation:

"Solving an equation" means finding the value of the variable that makes the equation true.  These equations will be in the form of 3(x + 8) = 30.  It can be done as a 2-step equation.  The other approach is to cover the (x + 8) and ask yourself "3 times what makes 30?"  The answer is 10, so the x + 8 equals 10.  The next question is "what plus 8 equals the 10?"  Answer is 2, so x = 2.

Example(s):

9(x + 4) = 63     9(x + 4)/9 = 63/9 which becomes x + 4 = 7 which becomes x + 4 - 4 = 7 - 4, so x = 3

5(x - 2) = 30      5(x - 2)/5 = 30/5 which becomes x - 2 = 6 which becomes x - 2 + 2 = 6 + 2, so x = 8, other  method: "5 times what equals 30?"  Answer: 6, so x - 2 = 6, "What minus 2 equals 6?" x = 8

3(x + 15) = 60     "3 times what equals 60?" Answer: 20, so x + 15 = 20, "What plus 15 equals 20?"  x = 5

Directions:

In this problem set you need to solve each equation using either method.  Try to be able to use both methods.  Strive for being able to solve equations with ease and then strive to increase your speed.  Good luck and enjoy the challenge!
